About this deal

I totally believed in her character, good and bad (she definitely has flaws, pretty large ones in fac) and she was hugely entertaining to read about. It made me tear up and then immediately burst into laughter before ultimately groaning in pain as Charlie and Becca passed each other like ships in the night. It turns out they are good listeners for each other, yet they don’t recognize how their relationship has changed. She pushes people away as a defence mechanism, so it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy when they do walk away leaving her alone.

I have only read a few books in this genre that have actually stuck in my mind afterwards - the first is One Day by David Nicholls and the second is A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby - and now I can add Ten Years to that list! When they make this story into a film, the actors are going to have a ball playing the main characters). At his wedding reception, Becca is enraged because she thinks Charlie is disrespecting Ally’s memory even though it’s been several years since she died. The only reason they’ve ever tolerated each other is because of their mutual love of one person: Ally. Given that Becca and Charlie have never gotten along dating back to when all three were in university together, they assume they will no longer be in touch.Becca and Charlie are mortal enemies and only “played” nice for the sake of the one they love, Ally.

Both characters are very flawed and damaged by the pain of loss and rejection from there own life experiences. But then it turns out that Ally's last wish is that Charlie and Becca each year jointly complete an item on her bucket list. But then Ally succumbed to pancreatic cancer, shattering both of their lives and allowing them to finally go their separate ways. A bucket list has been made and they need to do it for there friend but in doing so it means spending more time together. Both Charlie and Becca are normal, flawed human beings that I had no trouble believing were real people and would act in the way being described. They really truly saw each other for who they were and despite how uncomfortable they felt about that, they still kept being drawn back together. I love a good spice fest but this was a nice refresher and the steam in it was absolutely perfect for the story, setting, and characters. Authors, if you are a member of the Goodreads Author Program, you can edit information about your own books. Despite how much they mixed like oil and water Charlie and Becca actually did complement each other.

They’re tasked to meet once a year to carry out Ally’s bucket list of experiences that she had longed to do. Ten Years by Pernille Hughes is a laugh out loud, heart wrenching, joyful, lump in your throat treat. Charlie and Becca both love Ally - Charlie as a fiancée, Becca as best friend of many years - and her death, at a heartbreakingly young age, leaves them bereft. All in all, this book is thought-provoking whilst still being entertaining and not preachy – my favourite kind of novel. They are tied to each other by the death of Charlie fiancé and Becca best friend Ally who after her death has then going out and living the life she wanted for herself. The bulk of the story is about Becca and Charlie traversing grief and finding themselves and what they really want over the course of 10 years. However, the book's pacing can feel a little uneven at times, and some of the conflicts and resolutions may feel a bit contrived.
