About this deal

The aftercare advice given (if any) is usually inaccurate and any professional piercer will disagree with 90% of any information given on the aftercare sheets (pre-typed by the gun company) from these places – trust me, I’ve read one. Gun Piercings – We’ve all seen high street shops offering the service, as well as countless hairdressers, nail bars and jewellers (among others). But what’s so wrong about it? How do the guns work? What is the difference between a gun piercing and a needle piercing? What are the pros and cons with each? I’m going to cover as much as I can in the blog, but do leave a comment if there’s something that needs more explanation. Bone Prong: Sometimes referred to as a nose pin, a bone prong is a straight piece of jewelry with a small ball on one end to keep it from falling out. The healing time on a needle piercing on an earlobe is roughly 2 months. Yes, the gun-wielders will tell you it’s 6 weeks with the gun, but this is purely so parents will take their children to get their ears pierced at the start of the summer holidays (remember, it’s moneymoneymoney with big companies). With a gun, I would expect anything up to a year for healing, though of course different people will experience different healing times.

Experts advise against piercing guns because of a few different concerns. First, the APP contends that reusable piercing guns can expose clients to bloodborne pathogens because of their inability to be autoclaved. An autoclave is a small machine that uses heat, steam, and pressure to sterilize any instrument that isn’t single-use — but piercing guns are plastic, so wouldn’t hold up against the heat of an autoclave. (FWIW, Thompson says nearly everyone he knows in the industry uses autoclaving for the equipment used in piercings.) Also, according to the APP, while the external surface of piercing guns may be wiped down with alcohol or other antiseptics, microscopic particles could contaminate the internal mechanisms of the gun. Most people find that needle piercings hurt MUCH less than gun piercings. And the burning or throbbing pain which is often experienced after the piercing with guns is reduced to a dull ache/tenderness for a few minutes when a needle is used.Although gun piercing establishments usually train their operators, this training is not standardized and may amount to merely viewing a video, reading an instruction booklet, and/or practicing on cosmetic sponges or other employees. Allegations have been made that some establishments do not inform their employees of the serious risks involved in both performing and receiving gun piercings, and do not instruct staff on how to deal with situations such as client medical complications or gun malfunction. Indeed, surveys conducted in jewelry stores, beauty parlors and mall kiosks in England and the US revealed that many employees had little knowledge of risks or risk management related to their procedure. The autoclave should be spore-tested at least monthly, and the jewelry, needle, and tools used in the piercing process should be sterilized fresh for use, or be sterilized ahead of time and kept in sealed pouches that are used at the point of service,” he adds. 11. How will the piercing be done? You’ll have some pain when your nose is pierced. You may have some blood, swelling, tenderness, or bruising at first. It may be sore, tender, and red for up to 3 weeks.

Don’t get in any water that could be dirty until your nose heals. Avoid swimming pools, lakes, rivers, and hot tubs. Another lip piercing, it isn’t the straightest piercing I’ve come across, and in the bottom picture you can really see the damage done by the stud when a ring has been inserted. Jef Saunders, president of the Association of Professional Piercers (APP), says that piercers often compare the pain to having an eyebrow wax procedure done or a getting a shot. Nose piercings can close years later. Keep jewelry in your nose at all times so the hole stays open. Cost and Safe Types of Jewelry

OOPS!

I’m not for one minute saying that EVERY gun piercing will cause problems, or that EVERY needle piercing will heal without incident. Needle piercings can be problematic and swell, just like gun piercings, but it’s a much less common occurrence. And the damage done (if any) is much more rarely permanent/extensive. Proper aftercare is required with any piercing; failure to follow it can easily result in a poorly piercing, whether done with a gun or needle. The main problem with gun piercings is the jewellery used being sub-standard. I see many more gun piercings that have triggered an allergic reaction than those which are infected. Needle piercing can be SAFELY used for a much wider range of placements, and with far more jewellery options. Clean your nose gently with a gauze pad soaked in saline solution. Pat the area dry with a fresh paper towel.
