About this deal

talking about the way her anxiety and dislike for leaving her comfort zone really resonated with me. Beth reminds us that despite the fact that women’s football has come a long way, especially since the Euros, it is still massively underfunded and lacking in resources compared to the men. Beth Mead has been an inspiration to me for quite a few years now and being able to read about her journey helped me understand her more as a person and player.

Anyone reading this review who isn’t from England might not realise how captivated we were as a country by the 2022 European Championships. You don’t know what is going on in other people’s lives, what challenges they have overcome, or are keeping hidden. Beth Mead is one of the world's most talented footballers - Golden Boot winner and Player of the Tournament at the UEFA Euro 2022, England Player of the Year 2021-22, Arsenal Player of the Season 2021-22, and runner-up for the 2022 Ballon d'Or.

It was emotionally intense and draining at times, the off-the-pitch socialising and finding her place and being away from home, and she wanted to give up more than once. Since the publication of this book June Mead has sadly passed away ( “If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. I loved when Beth told Vivianne Miedema that they’d both been nominated for a Ballon d'Or and Viv “stared impassively” and said “Yes, it’s my fifth time. Now, Beth shares the challenges that shaped her, what she faced on the journey to the top, and the life events that made her stronger – from being dropped from the England squad and receiving devastating family news, to finding her best form under the guidance of Jonas Eidevall and Sarina Wiegman. At Boro’s Centre of Excellence, England training camps she attended as a teen, and when she first started at Arsenal as an adult.

If, like me, you followed last summer's European Championships, you would have shared in the euphoria and pride at our Lionesses winning the trophy after a hard-fought final versus Germany. I’m just starting on my football journey myself (a bit late but it’s okay) and it was so interesting to read about how football players train and work and how much they sacrifice to reach the levels that they are at. It was so fascinating to know the background to this great player, and really just made it even more impressive how far both she and women’s football has come. This diary style retelling of the euros was perfect, translating the feeling of pressure Beth felt in training sessions, games and tournaments, from her experience with homesickness and shyness when she was younger to having to adapt to a post-European champion who can’t go to McDonald’s without getting recognised life. The England team continues to work tirelessly to ensure that girls and women in sport receive equal recognition and treatment, whatever level they are playing at.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I remember the days of, football is for boys, you can't play with us and I am pleased to see that sport is moving in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go. The book starts with a dark time in Beth's life, then goes back to her childhood, her family, and of course, her start in football till the current day. Loads of insights into Beth's journey as a footballer and a celebration of everything she's achieved so far. knowing that beth, someone who i look up to is currently going through the same thing as me, made me feel so much less alone.
