About this deal

This is crucial if we hope to create an environment where coming out is no longer expected or necessary, because we value difference rather than seeing it as something that warrants disclosure. Each chapter is focused on a theme—'Adolescence', 'Love', 'Gender', 'Race' etc—and is mostly a memoir, with some parts moving more into guide and manifesto around the central theme of the idea that everyone transitions in some way. Bergdorf has spoken out recently about fellow Bloomsbury author JK Rowling, whose recent comments about transgender rights Bergdorf described as transphobic. This book is a fantastic starting point for anyone curious about the spectral nature of identity and sexuality. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The first trans woman of colour to model for L’Oreal then subsequently dumped when she spoke out about racism - only to get them to apologize and re hire once people actually began accepting that systemic racism is and has always happened . In 2019 she was appointed LGBT+ Editor at Dazed Beauty, profiling some of the most ground-breaking queer talent of the moment. Then, as she settles into her story, you come to realise the extraordinary intelligence, insight and power of this tenacious woman.

At the time I was living in Stratford, East London and still working in nightlife, but my modelling career was beginning to pick up pace.

When Teen Vogue wrote of Munroe Bergdorf “She’s a powerful and unstoppable force and the world should take notice” back in April 2018, they were right. I do think it is worth reading, though, especially if you're a fan of her work or wanted something to read for Pride Month. I was rapidly approaching my thirties and still living pay cheque to pay cheque, trying to keep my mental health from taking a complete nosedive in the way it had in the past. None of us ever becomes someone else entirely—regardless of how we identify—but nor do we stay the same forever. One of my favorite passages in the book is “The existence of LGBTQ+ Pride is a defiance of heteronormative society’s efforts to shame us as a community, because of our sexual identities and desires. Bergdorf offers critical insights, which are informed by her experience as a British, black, queer, transgender woman on institutional racism, queerness, surviving sexual assault, family reconciliation, and community formation. This is fairly short and easy to read (she's very good at making complex ideas very accessible) so I've given a high rating despite it's limitations as there's good stuff in there and I leant a lot.

I really only knew of author Bergdorf after the controversy of her being dropped as a model from L'Oréal after commenting about racism. She has recently been appointed as Contributing Editor at British Vogue, and has contributed to publications including the Guardian, Evening Standard, Grazia, i-D, Elle, Teen Vogue and Paper Magazine. She was Black, of mixed heritage, in a town where the only other Black people she saw were two girls who had been adopted by white parents; she was an effeminate boy, repeatedly ostracised and bullied for being different, not only by her peers, but by her peers’ parents, too.At other points in the book, there were some generalised statements about how, people are viewed in society that felt less backed up, for example how bisexuality and gender intersect, and it would've been good to know if that was based on statistics or was more of an opinion as it was presented as a fact without comment. In July 2021 Munroe delivered a key note at One Young World conference in Munich which was applauded by attendees and became one of their standout speeches that year.
