About this deal

However, this is not my first rodeo and although it's based on fact it's definitely a work of fiction and my opinion of them both hasn't altered despite the sugar coating. With more than three million copies of her books in print, she has been published in nineteen countries around the world. Finally, she can leave behind her old life in the United States, along with the memories of her doomed first marriage.

I took a bit of a break from all my Regency romances this fall in favor of some spooky books for September and October! She is scoffing at the company of the older ladies, because she wants to rub elbows only with young and influential people. This is a dramatic and richly detailed book about one of the most iconic romances of the 20th century. Wanneer je de korte inhoud leest zou je denken dat De Hertogin voornamelijk zal gaan over de affaire tussen Walis en prins Edward, maar de auteur zal vooral de relatie tussen Ernest en Wallis in de schijnwerpers zetten. As someone who doesn’t really take much interest in the British royal family, I was still quite aware of the name Wallis Simpson and how the king infamously gave up the throne for her - a twice divorced woman.

Like many other readers, I think this book fit perfectly in with the most recent royal wedding of Meghan Markel and Prince Harry. There was of course historical facts and references woven into the narrative but the bulk of the story focuses on Consuelo as a person rather than her historical impact which was perfectly fine with me. On a cold November day in 1895, a carriage approaches St Thomas Episcopal Church on New York City’s Fifth Avenue. But Rolfe is not who he seems, and he has other plans for Roxy and her movies–plans to support a growing unrest in Europe, plans that could break her heart and endanger her life. But a deal was made, trading some of the vast Vanderbilt wealth for a title and prestige, and Consuelo, bred to obey, realizes she must make the best of things.

It takes the intimidation out of writing a novel and leaves only the excitement of seeing a dream realized. The poet realises what has occurred as the hunt ends and the poet awakes with his book still in hand.Only one man possesses ambition and passions that match her own: John Churchill, a dashing young military hero. There are so many better authors out there with worthy books and I would encourage readers to find them. Der beliebte britische Sportprinz, der für die geschiedene Amerikanerin den Thron aufgab und ihre Geschichte so unsterblich machte. It is suggested she try France because they might not be as strict about these things as they are in England. I applaud Holden for being brave enough to attempt to illuminate Wallis in a different light however this book just wasn't for me.

the first part of the book whilst slow was reasonably interesting then about 60% of the way in it descended to mawkish sentimentality and a completely unconvincing portrayal of both Prince of Wales and Mrs Simpson. By the end of the book we see a lady who wants to shun this attention and live her simple life with her memories of the man she adored. In the perilous world of kings and queens, one woman matches ambition with loyalty and ruthless intrigue with all-consuming passion in this gripping historical fiction novel.

Upon her first appearance at the Gathering, some nobles and aristocrats questioned her capabilities and the role of women in society--that was to assist her husband, be his pillar of support, and make sure that their family lives for the next generation. Slechts de vijftig laatste pagina’s gaan over de liefdesverhouding tussen de prins en Wallis en de vele schandalen die er rond hangen. Like some other reviewers, I wish I had known how many years separated some events in the overall timeline, but in general I loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction and all things royal! Many admire her – and none more so, it appears, than Cora herself, who finds that even Austen's own spoiled heroine, Emma Woodhouse (in a gently pleasing metatextual touch, Goodwin has Cora reading Emma just before her ball begins), pales before her. Overwhelming (if disputed) evidence suggests that Chaucer wrote the poem to commemorate the death of Blanche of Lancaster, wife of John of Gaunt.
