About this deal

This is the novel on which Taiki Waititi's Jojo Rabbit is based, so if you haven't seen it and you want to see it (and I recommend you do because, in my view, it's one of the best films of the last few years), it's best to ignore my comments, because there will be a bit of compare and contrast going on. Even though it was within the city limits, we were partially surrounded by forests, Schottenwald and Gemeindewald, and partially by grassy fields. What we could spot from our windows was our neighbors' houses, three of them, in old gold or hunter green, the most-used alternatives to Schönbrunner yellow. Christine Leunens is an adept and eloquent storyteller -- Georgia Hunter * New York Times bestselling author of We Were the Lucky Ones * Enthralling throughout. Most of the others felt the characters were irredeemably horrible and that their actions didn't make sense.

CAGING SKIES is a very thought provoking novel which takes place in Austria during and after World War II. Read this one as I knew it was being adapted into a movie by Taika Waititi and wanted to see how he could handle such serious material. Standing in front of the stove like that, we'd dip bits of bread into it and bring them directly to our mouths, our forks getting devilishly hot. Herr and Frau Betzler, with their dignity and strength; old Frau Betzler with her wisdom and affection; Elsa with her courage – passive in her enforced imprisonment but never spiritless.

So though I leave it a fuzzy grey area with many possibilities even in my mind, my hope for her is that she makes her way to America where her brothers live. From the windows of our house we could not actually see the hills covered with vineyards, famed for the fruity Weißwein they'd produce after the grapes spent a summer of basking in the sun; still, if we took our bicycles we would be zigzagging along the roads just below them in a matter of minutes. SH: There is a spate of curious novels, from Robert Harris’s FATHERLAND to Philip Kerr’s Bernie Gunther series that set Nazi Germany in a historical light. SH: I must ask because it has been gnawing at me day and night, was this entire part of the book real or an illusion for him?

It is seen through the eyes of Viennese 12-year-old Johannes Betsler, a devout member of the pre-teen Jungvolk and later the teenage Hitler Youth.

Le gusta trabajar en la defensa terrestre de la ciudad y tiene un grupo de amigos nazis que disfrutan persiguiendo a gente de la resistencia. The themes of truth/lies, imprisonment/freedom, and all the ways in which the human mind adapts to extreme circumstances are explored.

I never actually met my grandparents on my mother's side, Oma and Opa, as they were buried in an avalanche long before I was born.

If she wanted me to feel a push and pull between him and Elsa and consider what it truly means to be caged, then it fell flat for me. The inspiration for JOJO RABBIT, winner of the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, by director Taika Waititi, and nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.CL: My agent, Laura Susijn, initially had trouble selling the book, but thankfully she had faith in it and persisted, and though it wasn’t first published in its original language, English, she found foreign publishers who agreed that it was an important work and translations in French, Italian, Spanish, and Catalan ensued. I wasn't really quite sure what to expect, having read the synopsis and also having seen the trailer for the film based on it, Jojo Rabbit. There is no redemption arc for Johannes and no empathetic or understandable motive that make the reader like him in any way despite being a terrible person as with other books like Perfume in which the protagonist is a murderer. CL: First I read accounts and memoirs of former Hitler Youth and Band of German Maidens that I found at the museum’s library.
